Ants: Safety First

April 27th, 2007 § 0

A large family of very small ants have been trying to establishing residence under the radiator in our bathroom. Irritating for most families, but a particular challenge for those with a small child with a severe bug phobia.

Alli is now patrolling the house in her self-proclaimed “Ant Safety Kit”. She’s wearing rain boots with pants tucked in (“so they can’t crawl up my legs”), brandishing a flyswatter (“don’t tell Daddy I’m killing them”), and a set of binoculars (“because they’re so small”).

The post where I not so subtly hint at my position on gun control

April 19th, 2007 § 0

Watched a CBS interview last night with the owner of the gun shop where the Virginia Tech student/assailant purchased his weapon. He first expressed “shock” that the gun used in the massacre was purchased from his shop. He then expressed how “normal” the sale was — how the student was clean-cut, no different from his many other student customers, making sure to point out that he wasn’t referring to underage students to whom he wasn’t permitted to sell, and again expressed that this was no different than the thousands of other transactions he makes all of the time.

I will now sleep peacefully with sweet dreams of thousands of “normal”, clean-cut, gun-toting college students trolling the streets of Virginia.

A moment for Virginia Tech

April 17th, 2007 § 0

There just aren’t words to express the magnitude of this kind of event, and how tightly I want to hold my own family close at the thought of the loss that others are feeling in theirs.

That a young person could feel this much grief and anger and helplessness AND that something of this magnitude could be accomplished so easily are things I really struggle with.

More Tooth Fairy Correspondence

April 17th, 2007 § 0

Found the following in a note tucked under Alli’s pillow (typed exactly as written, including punctuation!):

Translation for the inventive-spelling-impaired:

Dear Tooth Fairy,

Notes are better than money, but I love money too. But most of all, I love you. Now your name is “Kitty”, because your name was Tooth Fairy. I love you! Bye bye, Kitty. Oh, wait! I just forgot my friend’s Tooth Fairy’s name is Catherine, short for Kitty! Now it is bye bye for real.

Love, Alli
